52 WEEK CHALLENGE WEEK ONE

ROBERT COLEMAN of MOBJACK BAY VIRGINIA my 6th Great Grand Father!

52 ANCESTORS CHALLENGE relative number 1. week number 1. 20:

SCOURCES “The Coleman Family of Mobjack Bay Virginia” by Sherrianne Coleman Nichol 1998. Two manuscripts authored by Judge Solon Bernard Coleman of Fredericksburg Virginia. ca. 1958. “Coleman Lineage of Early America” by Charlotte Coleman Burt ca. 1967.

Not a lot is known about Robert Coleman and even less can be proven (linked to a source). The first known record shows that he was in “Upper Norfolk County Virginia on 2 March 1638 and was a “Headright” of Mr. Thomas Symons. Being a “Headright” meant that Mr. Symons received 50 acres of land for bringing Robert to this country.

We have yet to determine how old Robert may have been when arriving in “the colonies”. We have every reason to believe that he married Elizabeth Grizzell. We know that he settled in the Mobjack Bay area of Gloucester County Virginia. We know that Thomas was likely the first born who lived, arriving by 1654 in Gloucester Co.

We know that Mr. Thomas Ray, in his Will dated 25 Aug 1654, named Thomas as his “Godson”(1). This gives us the only clue to Roberts ancestry. More on this in a future Post!

Robert and Elizabeth’s second born is Robert b. 1656 in Essex Co.(2) and his Will was probated 13 Aug 1713 in Essex County. After 1704 This Robert Coleman was referred to as Captain.

Third born is believed, by Judge Solon B. Coleman, to have been Joseph ca. 1658 d. after 1704.

Grizzell, the only female, was b. ca. 1660.

Daniel Coleman was b. ca.1662 in Gloucester Co. and was living in New Kent by 1688 he d. before 7 June 1722 in what had become King and Queen County.

John Coleman is the last known child of Robert and Grizzell b. ca. 1665. He lived in Gloucester Co. Abingdon and Petsworth Parishes.
